Mr. Bisson
General Goals and Objectives
This course will help the student identify the steps needed in order to achieve their goals. We will look at the value of work in our lives, communities, and society and how they can be viewed from diverse perspectives. The student will understand that in order to achieve their goals they will have to put in the necessary time, effort and perseverance. We will discuss the economy and look at labour markets and see how they change on a regular basis. This will show the student that they must be flexible and be able to change directions depending on the job market at the time. In order to help guide their decision making, they will have to take into account their individual, community and educational choices.
Course content
Personal Development
Connections to Community
Life and Career Plan
Assignments and Assessments
This course is an exploratory course that takes up half of a term. In other words, we will work together for approximately 20 blocks in the first term. This is not a lot of time therefore it is very important that your student be in class on a regular basis.
The major assignment will be a research project based on a career of interest to your student. We will look at all of the steps it takes to get to that career including goal setting, project management, cultural and social awareness, grad requirements, technology and the various roles of community, school, personal network and mentorship in career planning.
The project above may be presented in a number of different ways from a poster, to a power point presentation, an oral presentation, a story board, etc…
In order to help your student better understand the various points above, we will have classroom discussions, bring in guest speakers when possible, do brainstorming, play games, do research on the computer as well as in books, etc…
As for assessment, classroom participation is very important. They will do self-assessments regularly using rubrics that we will go over before they are used. This way they know exactly how they are being assessed and how they may improve as time goes by. Also, for the bigger project, each student and I will sit down and create a rubric together. This way they will be directly involved in their own learning.
If ever you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the following email address which I check many times a day : [email protected] . I will be more than happy to discuss any issues that you may have. I look forward to working with your child.
