How do I get to where I want to know ?
The kids will be doing a project about a career of interest that they have chosen. First of all, they will be writing the Myers-Briggs personality test that will give them an idea of what careers might match up with who they are. I give them a list and ask them to choose 5 careers from the list. Then, I ask them to choose 5 other careers that they might be interested in. Once this is done, I asked them to do a quick research to find out what would be the starting salaries for each career as well as their salary after they had been doing the job for many years.
This really opens up their eyes to the future. The next step was to ask them to find out what school, program or license might be needed in order to achieve that career.
Once this is done, I will ask the kids to choose just 4 of the initial 10 careers originally chosen. They will be then asked to go into more detail about information dealing with that career. They will be asked to not only find the school, program or license in order to achieve each career, but they must also find the following information pertaining to that school : What city is that school found in ? What is the population of that city ? What is the undergraduate population of that school or program? How long is the program ? What are the costs for tuition, room and board on campus for the first year of school ? What would the costs be for tuition, room and board for the next 3 years off campus?
Once this is done, I will ask the kids to choose just one career for which they will make a poster, either 3 dimensional or digital that we include all of the information mentioned above as well as the following: What were the prerequisits needed to get into the school of choice ? What courses does the student need in High School in order to get into their program of choice that will lead to their career of interest. Plus, they are to include extra information of their choosing. We will brainstorm in the classroom to see what kind of info they might want to include.
