Anatomy and Physiology 12 – Final Assessment
Below you will find a variety of major questions that cover the Nervous System, Excretory System, the Reproductive System, the Circulatory System, the Respiratory System and some extra. You will notice that there is a given maximum mark for each question for a total of 420 points. You will notice that some of the questions are in bold. These are questions that must be completed. If you wish to try get the best possible mark, answer every question. By doing just the 11 questions required and acing them, you would get a mark in the proficient range. In doing more or all of the questions or being very creative in how you answer your questions, you bring in the possibility of scoring in the extending range. Good luck.
1.Nervous System – choose 2 from b, c, d
a.Synaptic cleft – In your own words, please explain how a nerve impulse travels from an axon to a neighbouring dendrite. Please use the diagram given in class to aid in your explanation. (Your own words please, not the steps verbatim from 1 through to 5 on the image) (30)
b.Describe a nerve impulse transmission. Please include the action potential graph in your explanation and please include how the Na/K pump resets the ions after the impulse has passed. (30)
c.Explain how the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland work together to maintain homeostasis within the body. Please give a few examples. (30)
d.Select one of the health topics presented in table l.1 on page 155 of your book. Determine how common it is and what some possible treatments there are for that disease or syndrome. (50)
2.Excretory System – choose at least one of a or b
a.Draw, label and explain how the nephron works. (30)
b.What is the role of the hypothalamus and posterior pituitary gland in regulating the volume of urine produced? (20)
3.Reproductive System – choose 2 from a, c or d
a.i. Draw and label the parts of a sperm cell and give the function for each part.
ii. List the components of semen and explain what they do. (20)
b.Using diagrams and labels, describe the menstrual cycle. (30)
c.Describe a negative and a positive feedback loop and give examples for each one. (10)
d.What event marks the beginning of pregnancy? What changes occur to the female reproductive system as a result of pregnancy? (20)
4.Circulatory and Respiratory Systems. Choose either b or c
a.Describe, in detail how oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between the lungs and capillaries as well as the capillaries and tissues. (30)
b.Describe all of the components of blood, where they are produced and what are their functions. Also, list the 5 specific types of white blood cells and give their functions. (20)
c.Draw and label the pulmonary and systemic circulatory systems indicating all of the major blood vessels. Use red and blue to indicate oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. (20)
5.Extra – choose one from a or b
a. List 7 hormones associated with the reproductive system. For each one, identify its
source, target organ and effect. (Use a table for your answer) (30)
b.Describe, in detail, the fight, flight, fright response. (20)
c.The Yukon First Nations have been using traditional medicines since their beginning. Make a list of the various traditional medicines that are used in the Yukon (at least 10) explaining their origin, when they are harvested and what they might be used for. (30)
